Internships allow students to gain practical on-the-job training for companies within an area of expertise related to their studies or interests. In Japan, internships are an opportunity for both national and international students to experience Japanese business practices. This allows them to acquire business manners, greetings and to enhance office communication skills.

Internships for foreign students are normally offered twice a year; during spring and summer school breaks, although companies have recently started offering internship opportunities all year-round. In Japan, students can be paid between usually from ¥990 to ¥1600 per hour. The increase of internship opportunities come from the idea that international students can support the upgrading of Japanese industries and contribute to the globalisation of Japanese firms.
