Waseda University is a private Japanese University, with its main campus located in Shinjuku, Tokyo. As of 2016, there were over 42,800 undergraduate students and over 8,200 graduate students.
It is one of the most prestigious and selective universities of Japan, and among its notable alumni are several Japanese Prime Ministers, international best-selling author Haruki Murakami, and former or current CEOs of companies including Uniqlo, Sony, Honda etc.
Waseda University has a very international and welcoming environment, and programs offered vary from a one-month summer session to undergraduate and graduate courses.
Waseda Summer Course
In 2014, Waseda University started offering a four-week summer program for undergraduates which has welcomed, up to date, students from over 70 universities worldwide. During this one-month session, students can take courses which provide an insight into Japan in the fields of culture, business, economics, literature and politics. Additionally, students can take Japanese language courses.
The 2019 program will run from June 21st to July 19th.
Students can choose two courses from the following list :
- Japanese culture and Society
- Literature and Art
- Anthropology and Sociology
Additionally, Waseda University offers three types of Japanese Language Programs :
- Talk in Japanese I
- Talk in Japanese II
- Talk in Japanese III
The three programs differ by proficiency level, and the result of the placement test will allocate students based on their level.
All levels offer classes where students will be able to talk about daily topics, using Japanese phrases and expressions. Through assignments, quizzes and presentations, students will have a chance to improve their language ability in a fun and entertaining way.
Waseda Summer Course Fees
The Waseda Summer Course offers several plan options, including :
- Plan A : This options covers domestic insurance, housing fee, airport pickup, administration charges, a field trip to Nikko, and students can enroll to two courses. The fee for this plan is JPY 490,000. The Japanese Language Program is an additional JPY 36,400.
- Plan B : This option offers the same conditions of Plan A, except for the housing fee. The fee for this plan is JPY 325,000.
Waseda Japanese Language Program
If students wish to study Japanese for a longer time, Waseda also offers alternative language courses, such as the Japanese Language Program. This course can be a one-year or half-year program to study Japanese intensively.
There are two starting date options :
- Spring Semester: April 1 to September 15
- Fall Semester: September 21 to March 15
This intensive program offers eight different levels, and students will be allocated to each level based on the placement test result.
Waseda Japanese Language Program Fees
The half-year program costs JPY 505,200, while the one-year program costs JPY978,400.
