Why PEAK?

PEAK, or Programs in English at Komaba, is a one of a kind Bachelor of Arts program as it reflects Tokyo University’s 140 years of educational history in light of innovation. Emphasizing the importance of liberal arts education, it aspires for a well-rounded education, allowing the learner to be ready for any challenges at workplace or in social situations. No prior knowledge of Japanese is required, but compulsory Japanese language courses are included in the curriculum.

Courses

There are two study paths that students can choose from at PEAK – Japan in East Asia (JEA) and Environmental Sciences (ES). Students spend their first two years attending liberal arts courses designated for each of the two programs, building a strong foundation for further studies. Starting from third year, students take major specific courses and seminars.

ES students will be required to take Academic English courses in their first three semesters, while JEA students will be required to take English courses from their first to sixth semester. As University of Tokyo believes learning Japanese is crucial, PEAK offers Japanese Language classes divided to five levels, from beginner to advanced. Students are required to take Japanese Language courses for three semesters. Later, elective course option is also available. The class size will be around 15 students. 

Applying

In 2018, the average standardized test scores were:

SAT: a combined score of 1529 for Reasoning section
ACT: an average score of 34
IB:  total of 39 points

Also in 2018, total of 302 students applied to PEAK Program and 64 (including 39 conditional offers) of them were accepted, making the acceptance rate 21%.

Application Guidelines are announced on the website in early July every year.

Fees and Scholarship

The admission fee (paid at the time of enrollment) is 282’000JPY. The annual tuition fee is 535’800JPY.

There are merit based scholarships.  All scholarships are offered when successful applicants are notified of their admission to the university. The selection of scholarship recipients is based on the screening process and no separate application is needed.

  1. The University of Tokyo Scholarship – offered to students with highest academic achievement.  It is a four-year scholarship that covers the admission fee, tuition, and living expenses (JPY126,000 a month). 10 applicants are offered this scholarship.
  2. Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship – four-year scholarship that covers the admission fee, tuition, round-trip economy-class airline ticket between home country and Japan, and living expenses (JPY120,000 a month). 5 applicants are offered this scholarship.

  3. NIHON CHOUZAI Co., Ltd. – UTokyo Scholarship for ASEAN Students -One ASEAN student may be offered a four-year scholarship; this will cover the living expenses (JPY 100,000 a month) for up to four consecutive years.

  4. The University of Tokyo-JAGAM Supplementary Scholarship for Malaysian Nationals – Japan Graduates’ Association of Malaysia (JAGAM) offers a one-way economy class airline ticket from Malaysia to Narita/Haneda International Airport and a return economy-class ticket upon graduation to up to three students recommended by the University of Tokyo.   5. The University of Tokyo-JUGAS Supplementary Scholarship for Singaporean Nationals –  Japanese University Graduates Association of Singapore (JUGAS) offers a one-way economy class airline ticket from Singapore to Narita/Haneda International Airport and a return economy-class ticket upon graduation to up to three students recommended by the University of Tokyo. After Graduation

PEAK Graduates have broad opportunities in terms of career path and employment. As ES graduates have in depth knowledge in both science and social science, it gives students a rare ability to tackle environmental issues in a holistic manner. Students can pursue career in either research or industry. Consultancy and government are popular career paths.

JEA graduates usually pursue career in international/national public services, multi-national business, journalism, international NGOs, and education. The PEAK interdisciplinary approach in humanity and social science studies, moreover the bilingual spirit of JEA graduates allow them to be competitive employees on field.
