Dong Hua Educational and Cultural Exchange Foundation, also known as Toka Kyoiku Bunka Koryu Zaidan (東華教育文化交流財団), is an institution funded by the Tokyo Overseas General Assembly. The foundation aims to deepen ties between Japan and China and promote their mutual understanding by offering scholarship and grant aids for privately-financed Chinese international students and non-profit organizations.

Scholarship

Eligibility

Privately-funded students of China (including Hongkong, Taiwan, and Macau) who are academically distinguished, physically healthy and in need of economic assistance for studying abroad. The eligible academic level of applicants are Undergraduate (3rd year and after), Master’s degree and Doctorate degree. Students must also meet either of the following conditions:

(1) Enrolled or scheduled for enrollment in a Japanese undergraduate or graduate university for study abroad.

(2) Enrolled or scheduled for enrollment in a Chinese undergraduate or graduate university for study abroad.

Amount

For (1), the amount of scholarship would be 30,000 JPY per month for one year. Extension of duration is possible but it should not exceed two years.

For (2), the amount of scholarship would be 100,000 JPY per month for one year. Extension of duration is possible but it should not exceed two years.

Application

The application period is from November 1st until 20th. Students must apply directly to the organization. Selection would be based on the submitted documents.   • Recommendation Letter (sealed by the recommender)
  • Questionnaire
  • Research Proposal
  • Certificate of enrollment for undergraduate/graduate students at the time of application
  • Copy of the letter of acceptance for students entering graduate school
  • Academic Transcript
  • Copy of a residence certificate provided by the municipal office or a copy of your residence card
  • Copy of your passport
  • Copy of the scorecard or certificate for JLPT or Examination for Japanese University Admission (if possible)
  • Self-addressed envelope

Grant

Eligibility

Business individuals or non-profit organizations who plan to implement a project that contributes to mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and China.

Amount

The grant amount depends on the calculation of the foundation regarding the necessary amount of fund for implementing a certain project. The full amount of the subsidy would be 500,000 JPY.

Application

The application period is from January 5th to 20th. Organizations must mail the necessary documents directly to the organization. Selection would be based on the submitted documents. The guideline for the application is available at the official Toka Kyoiku Bunka Koryu Zaidan website.

Application Documents are as follows:

  • Documents certifying the employer
  • Organization: Registered transcripts/ Contracts/ Proof for Financial Contents
  •  Individual: Copy of resident card or family register/ Incumbency Certificate/ Documents such as written documents, biographies, or results of research
  • Documents proving interaction with co-organizers
  • Business plan and budget form
  • Copy of contract or invitation letters relating to the project (if possible)
  • If one has undergone a similar project that was subsidized in the past, submit a business, income, and expenditure report of that project.
  • Self-addressed envelope
