The day I received the first package of my scholarship, it was the best day after my high school graduation. The scholarship has successfully launched me onto a miraculous journey full of unforgettable experiences, challenges, and growth. Thanks to the offer, I have made so many sweet and tough memories within academic endeavor and within the international community I belonged to; something that I am forever grateful and proud of. However, I soon recognized that I was one of the few lucky ones who even knew Japanese scholarships opportunities. To put an end to that, here is my recommendation list of scholarship that any Vietnamese student should try to apply to.

MEXT – Monbukagakusho Scholarship

Every Vietnamese students should try to apply to the MEXT  Monbukagukusho Scholarship. It is one of the most prestigious scholarships for entering top Japanese universities, offered by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports Science and Technology (MEXT), Japanese Government. It is a full scholarship granted to students with excellent academic achievements who wish to pursue a higher education in Japan, applying prior to entering Japan, or applying during the enrollment period while being in Japan.

If you are outside of Japan, applying to Japanese universities and would like to receive MEXT Scholarship, you would need to receive Japanese Embassy recommendation or direct university recommendation if the universities have a partnership with MEXT. The other way to do it is to apply while you are in Japan as a privately financed, full-time postgraduate foreign students. The period of applying often best done during April and May a year prior to the commencing date. For those who are 17 and under 25, you can apply as an undergraduate student, college of technology students, or special training college students.

Lawson Scholarship

The Lawson Scholarship is offered by Lawson Inc. Japan for especially Vietnamese students who are under 20 years old by the time of arrival in Japan. Those who have an incentive to do part-time work at any given Lawson store in Japan for experiences are encouraged to apply to this scholarship, which is valued up to 27,484,766 Vietnamese dong / month (130,000 JPY) to cover the expenses to pursue a Bachelor degree, or studying Japanese in Japanese language institute or other university programs. In order to receive acceptance in October, it is recommended that the student start the application process in between April to May. If the student wishes to enroll in a school in April, it is best recommended to start the process between September and late November.

For Vietnamese students, the process can be done in either Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city, given that the student will be required to submit application documents and to go through interviews with the Lawson Scholarship providers. You will be able to study in some of the most energetic environments, improving your Japanese skill and gaining working experience in the popular convenient store chain.

Yoshida Scholarship Foundation – YKK Leaders 21

Founded by Tadahiro Yoshida, YSF scholarship grants focusing on providing opportunities for highly capable graduate students at home and abroad. As a private scholarship foundation, YSF aims to fully demonstrate its strength by inviting a wide range of students, conducting screening in a strict manner and providing wholehearted support as a matter of policy. In this program, a scholarship grant is awarded to foreign students, including Vietnamese students who study Natural Sciences at a graduate school in Japan.

The YSF scholarship requires that applicants have a high level of academic research capabilities, a clear objective of studying in Japan, a spirit of giving back to society through the fruit of their study/research; and various leadership qualities. Designated universities eligible for scholarship funding include:

  • Tokyo Institute of Technology
  • Nagoya University
  • Kyoto University
  • Osaka University
  • Kyushu University
  • Keio University
  • Waseda University
  • Doshisha University
  • Kwansei Gakuin University

Students recommended by one of the designated universities listed above will be awarded this scholarship grant subject to approval. Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) – Student Exchange Support Program In Japan

Offered by Japan Student Service Organization, the financial aid is available for any international student, including Vietnamese, who is planning to participate in short-term courses in any chosen university or educational institution in Japan. The value of scholarship is up to 16,908,130 Vietnamese dong/ month (80,000 JPY), paid partially to cover the cost of studying and living in Japan during the designated period. The student must be registered in a regular course or program from Vietnamese universities (outside of Japan) with an excellent studying record. They must also receive acceptance from a Japanese education institution under a student exchange agreement.

While receiving this scholarship, the recipient cannot receive any other scholarship from the Japanese government such as the MEXT scholarship. However, students are able to receive multiple scholarships as long as the total fund of these scholarships does not exceed the value of 16,908,130 Vietnamese dong / month (80,000 JPY) accordingly. Beside the realistic financial need to enroll in an exchange program in Japan, the student also have to be qualified for student visa for the period of the course.

The Asia-Fukuoka Foster Parents Scholarship

Available to Vietnamese students, the scholarship offered by Fukuoka International Association is highly recommended for those who are planning to study in a college of technology for their undergraduate, master, or doctorate program in Japan. The scholarship will grant students  4,227,961 Vietnamese dong/ month (20,000 yen) for a year. The application period lasts from mid-May to mid-June, are made through the international student division or student division of the institution at which you are enrolled. This scholarship is designated for self-funded international students who are enrolled at universities, junior colleges and national technical high schools outside the Fukuoka metropolitan area.

These are just a few examples of scholarships that Vietnamese students can apply to receive financial support from Japan. In order to receive the scholarship, the recipients are often chosen based upon their past performance, and their potential to continuously deliver the great quality they possess even after receiving the scholarship.
