Kyushu University

Founded in 1911, Kyushu University (九州大学) is one of the seven imperial universities in Japan and has been a leader in education and research not just in Japan but throughout Asia. The university has 11 undergraduate departments and 18 graduate schools with their affiliated research centers.

Having been chosen as one of the thirteen universities for the Global 30 (G30) Project by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Kyushu University now offers five undergraduate programs in agricultural science and engineering, as well as 54 graduate programs in all 18 of its graduate schools, all taught exclusively in English.

Kyushu University

Kyushu University continued to offer G30 programs even after the project was terminated at the end of March 2014. The university also actively improved its support system for international students with the International Student and Researcher Support Center which provides assistance to students in finding an apartment, as well as academic support and even offers airport pickup services, etc to help facilitate students’ lives on and off campus.

Located in Fukuoka, Kyushu University has a total student population of 19,308 as of 2015, of which over 10% are international students. Being one of the most highly regarded and advanced medical schools in Asia, the university’s main strengths lie in its particularly active and innovative science programs, of which many are offered in English.

1. Graduate School of Integrated Sciences for Global Society

The Graduate School of Integrated Sciences for Global Society offers two programs in English which were launched in 2011:

  • International Master’s Program in Integrated Science for Global Society
  • International Doctoral Program in Integrated Science for Global Society

2. Graduate School of Human-Environment Studies

The Graduate School of Human-Environment Studies offers two programs in English which were launched in 2010:

  • International Master’s Course in Sustainable Architecture and Urban Systems
  • International Doctoral Course in Sustainable Architecture and Urban Systems

3. Graduate School of Humanities

The Graduate School of Humanities offers an International Master’s Program in Japanese Humanities which was launched in 2011.

4. Graduate School of Law

The Graduate School of Law offers many unique programs in English.

The LL.D. Program was launched in 1999  offers students the unique opportunity of preparing a doctoral thesis in English while studying at Kyushu University.

The IEBL Program (LL.M. in International Economic and Business Law) which was launched in 1994 was designed to provide international and Japanese students with the ability to confront the challenges of international economic affairs and commercial transactions, being Japan’s first Master’s Program taught entirely in English.

The Young Leaders’ Program which was launched in 2001 by the Japanese Government in the fields of Public Administration, Business Administration, and Law, is designed to nurture future national leaders in Asia, and is open to young legal professionals and government officials. The aim of the program is to develop leaders who will play key roles in establishing friendly relationships and improved policy planning between Asian countries, including Japan.

The BiP (Bilingual Master’s Program in Laws LL.M.) was established in 2009 and allows students to study in a bilingual environment at a graduate level. Students under this program are given the choice of taking classes and writing a thesis in English or Japanese.

Finally, the CSPA Program (Master of Laws in Comparative Studies of Politics and Administration in Asia) was launched in 1997 in recognition of the changing context of contemporary Asia. The program focuses on research into pressing contemporary issues through the use of comparative studies.

5. Graduate School of Economics

The Graduate School of Economics launched the following two programs in English in 2010:

  • International Master’s Program in Economics (IMPE)
  • International Doctoral Program in Economics (IDPE)

The Programs revolve around the study of three areas: Economic System Analysis, Economic Analysis and Policy, and Mathematical and Computer Sciences.

6. Graduate School of Sciences

The Graduate School of Sciences offers the following two programs in English starting from 2010.

  • International Master’s Program in the Graduate School of Sciences
  • International Doctoral Program in the Graduate School of Sciences

The three Departments of the School – Physics, Chemistry, and Earth and Planetary Sciences – work closely together to provide these graduate programs and collaborates even with the Kyushu University Museum and the Space Environment Research Center.

7. Graduate School of Mathematics

The Graduate School of Mathematics offers both an International Master’s Program in Mathematics (launched in 2010) as well as an International Doctoral Program in Mathematics (launched in 2009). The programs provides close guidance on thesis writing, as well a whole array of lectures in topics from pure mathematics and applied mathematics.

8. Graduate School of Systems Life Sciences

The Graduate school of Systems Life Sciences launched the International Doctoral Program in Systems Life Sciences in 2010 which provides students with the unique chance to study in a single Department comprised of the five divisions of Bioinformatics, Life Engineering, Medical Molecular Cell Biology, Molecular Life Sciences and Biological Sciences in a five-year doctoral course. A two-year Master’s program is also available.

9. Graduate School of Medical Sciences

The Graduate School of Medical Sciences launched the International Doctoral Program in Medical Science in 2011 where students will select one laboratory from among over 50 laboratories that cover almost all areas of the medical sciences, both basic and clinical.

10. Department of Health Sciences

The Department of Health Sciences launched the 2-year International Master’s Program in Asia Health Sciences in 2011 as well as the 3-year International Doctoral Program in Health Sciences in 2013 to train researchers as well as health, medical care and welfare leaders in Asia and the rest of the world.

11. Graduate School of Dental Science

The Graduate School of Dental Science offers a 4-year International Doctoral Program in Dental Science since 2010. The school also has two major research projects : “Dental and Craniofacial Morphogenesis and Tissue Regeneration,” and “Oral Health Science.” which students are expected to take part in either one or both of them.

12. Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences

The Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences launched the International Course in the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2010, providing students with  opportunities for closely supervised research experiments and practice in fields such as medicinal chemistry, biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, physical chemistry, pharmacokinetics, and pharmaceutics.

13. Graduate School of Engineering

The Graduate School of Engineering offers the following programs since 2011.

  • International Master’s Program in Applied Chemistry
  • International Doctoral Program in Applied Chemistry 

Students will receive education and guidance from the three research groups in the Department of Applied Chemistry: Chemistry and Biochemistry, Material Physics and Chemistry, and Chemical Systems and Engineering. 

  • International Master’s Program in Materials Science and Engineering
  • International Doctoral Program in Materials Science and Engineering

The program aims to equip students with the fundamentals required for understanding the structures and properties of various materials such as metals, alloys, ceramics, semiconductors, and composites, and for developing advanced materials that are able to respond to future needs.

  • International Master’s Program in Chemical Engineering
  • International Doctoral Program in Chemical Engineering

The Department of Chemical Engineering comprises of eight specialized fields of Physical Chemistry, Reaction Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Mass Transfer Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Fluid Engineering, Equipment Design Engineering, and Process Systems Engineering which students may choose to study.

14. Graduate School of Design

The Graduate School of Design launched the Doctoral Program of Human Science International Course in 2010 which aims to “provide insight into human physiological and psychological characteristics to design an eco-friendly living environment in which we can comfortably interact with products, systems and equipment”. The program is ideally designed for those seeking career paths as design professionals in the engineering, development, research or marketing industry, as well as academia.

15. Graduate School of Information Science and Electrical Engineering

The Graduate School of Information Science and Electrical Engineering offers the International Doctoral Program in Information Science and Electrical Engineering since 2011.  Students can focus on subjects such as VLSI engineering, radio frequency (RF) integrated circuit design, wireless communication systems and networks, and microwave engineering.

16. Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Engineering Sciences

The Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Engineering Sciences, consisting of five Departments – Applied Science for Electronics and Materials, Molecular and Material Sciences, Advanced Energy Engineering Science, Energy and Environmental Engineering, and Earth System Science and Technology – offers the following programs since 1999.

  • International Master’s Program in Applied Science for Electronics and Materials
  • International Master’s Program in Molecular and Material Sciences
  • International Master’s Program in Advanced Energy Engineering Science
  • International Master’s Program in Energy and Environmental Engineering

17. Graduate School of Bioresource and Bioenvironmental Sciences

The Graduate School of Bioresource and Bioenvironmental Sciences offers the International Development Research Course (M.Sc) as well as the International Development Research Course (Ph.D.) since 1994. These Courses are among the first English language programs offered by Kyushu University and offers a large range of scholarship opportunities. 

18. Graduate School of Integrated Frontier Sciences

The Graduate School of Integrated Frontier Sciences started the International Master’s Program in Automotive Science in October 2011 and the International Doctoral Program in Automotive Science in October 2012.
