Kanazawa University (KU) is a national university built in the city of Kanazawa, the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture. KU aims to create an optimal environment for students to receive specialized knowledge and be able to carry out research. If you are a student with research as your passion and aim to study in Japan, but are concerned about your living cost, KU may be the choice for you. KU offers a variety of scholarship opportunities for students enrolling in their university.

Here is a list containing brief descriptions about some of the scholarships.

Scholarships from Kanazawa University

[Study at KU Scholarship] For Research Exchanges of Graduate Students

This Kanazawa University scholarship is aimed for international graduate students doing research with an exchange to Kanazawa University.

Eligibility: Applicants have to be enrolled at a foreign univerity as a graduate student. They have to study at Kanazawa University for more than two days for research exchanges including specialized practical works, training, academic conferences, or laboratory rotations.

Scholarship amount:

  1. For two days to one month: 40,000 yen
  2. For more than one month: 70,000 yen/month (with a maximum of 6 months)

[Study at KU Scholarship] For promotion of inbound Privately Financed International Student

This Kanazawa University scholarship is aimed at international graduate students seeking to obtain a degree from Kanazawa University.

Eligibility: Applicants have to graduate, or be expected to graduate, at universities in the list of universities provided by the scholarship. Or be enrolled in a double degree progam at Kanazawa University. *Please note, those who already receive external scholarship (ie. JASSO) cannot apply for this scholarship.

Scholarship amount:

  1. 180,000 yen/year
  2. 90,000 yen/semester

Scholarships by Private Organizations

If you are not able to get the Kanazawa University scholarship, do not fret. Other Japanese scholarships funded by various private organizations are also available for students, both in undergraduate and graduate level.  In order to apply for scholarships which require a recommendation from the university, students will be called to submit their applications in June. In the case where a student is not able to do so, they will be allowed to apply in October.

Kobayashi International Scholarship Foundation

Eligibility: Applicants should fulfill the following criteria:

  • 3rd year of above (5th year or above for medicine)
  • Students from Asia
  • Participation in exchange events
  • Communication ability in Japanese
  • Age under 35

Scholarship amount: a monthly award of 150,000 yen (paid until the final academic year of the course).

SGH Foundation

Eligibility: Applicants should fulfill the following criteria:

  • Students from the following Southeast Asian countries: Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia
  • 3rd year students (5th year for medicine)
  • Participation in exchange events
  • Sufficient Japanese skills

Scholarship amount: a monthly award of 120,000 yen for two years.

Heiwa Nakajima Foundation

Eligibility: Applicants should fulfill the following criteria:

  • New scholarship recipients
  • Sufficient Japanese skills

Scholarship amount: a monthly award of 100,000 yen for 1 year.

Scholarships which do not require university recommendation

Satoyo International Scholarship Foundation

Eligibility: Applicants should fulfill the following criteria:

  • Students from the following countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, East Timor, Vietnam
  • At least 1 academic year remaining
  • Participation in exchange events

Scholarship amount: a monthly award of 120,000 yen for two years.

Graduate Level

SGH Foundation

Eligibility: Applicants should fulfill the following criteria:

  • Students from the following Southeast Asian countries: Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia
  • 1st year students of master’s course or 2nd year students of doctorate course (3rd year for medicine)
  • Participation in exchange events
  • Sufficient Japanese skills
  • Age under 35

Scholarship amount: a monthly award of 120,000 yen (for Master), 180,000 yen (for Doctor) for 2 years.

Kawashima Shoji Memorial Foundation

Eligibility: Applicants should fulfill the following criteria:

  • Students in the folloing majors: in humanities, sociology, natural sciences
  • Sufficient Japanese skills to fill out application forms

Scholarship amount: a monthly award of 100,000 yen for two years.

Kyoritsu International Foundation

Eligibility: Applicants should fulfill the following criteria:

  • Students from Asia (excluding British citizens in Hong Kong)
  • At least 2 academic years remaining
  • Participation in seminars held by the foundation

Scholarship amount: a monthly award of 100,000 yen for two years.

Scholarships which do not require university recommendation

Honjo International Scholarship Foundation

Eligibility: Applicants should fulfill the following criteria:

  • For Doctorate course: students up to age 35 as of April of the award year
  • For Master course: students up to age 30 as of April of the award year

Scholarship amount:

  • For duration of 1-2 years: 200,000 yen/month
  • For duration of 3 years: 180,000 yen/month
  • For duration of 4-5 years: 150,000 yen/month

Sato Yo International Scholarship Foundation

Eligibility: Applicants should fulfill the following criteria:

  • Students from the following countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, East Timor, Vietnam
  • Students that have at least 1 academic year remaining (excluding doctorate course)
  • Participation in exchange events
  • Sufficient Japanese skills for study and research

Scholarship amount: a monthly award of 180,000 yen for 2 years.
