About Waseda University 

Waseda University was founded in 1882 and named Tokyo Senmon Gakko by Ōkuma Shigenobu, the former Prime Minister of Japan and an early advocate of Western studies in Japan. 

With rigorous admission, Waseda University is regarded as one of the most prestigious universities Japanese universities, and is often paired with Keio University as the best private university in Japan. The university is especially well-known for its programs in political science and economics. Notable alumni of Waseda University include seven Prime Ministers of Japan, multiple CEOs and Presidents of globally eminent companies, such as Honda, Nintendo, Sony, etc. and many athletes, artists, novelists. 

Waseda is home to thirty-six departments: thirteen undergraduate schools and twenty-three graduate schools. It has a very large student body of roughly 50,000 students (41,965 Undergraduates/8,256 Postgraduates) spread over 8 campuses as of 2018. Waseda had an admission rate of 17% in 2015 and provided 10 billion JPY worth of financial aid to its students in 2017. 

About Waseda Business School 

Waseda Business School of current days traces back its history to The Systems Science Institute when it started to offer a non-degree, one-year professional education program at the graduate level in 1973. Then, the brand name of Waseda Business School started to appear on official documents in the 1980s. 

After many improvements of current programs and launches of new ones, eventually, in 2016, the Graduate School of Finance, Accounting and Law, and Waseda Business School integrated to form the Graduate School of Business and Finance, which boasts a wide range of MBA programs in both English and Japanese, with both options of full-time or part-time commitment to suit the needs of a growing number of business people in our world today.

MBA Programs in English

International MBA

The International MBA program is full-time and one of the largest English-taught MBA programs in Japan. The program has a unique seminar system where students can select seminars within their field of interest and have in-depth discussions with their instructors and fellow classmates. Within the core curriculum, there are two main categories. First, the Compulsory Core Course consists of seven courses, all of which are required. This will give students a holistic understanding of all aspects that a businessperson needs to be knowledgeable about.

Then, after completing the  Compulsory Core Courses, students need to select at least three out of five Compulsory Elective Core Courses:

To complete the program, students must have been enrolled for more than two years, have acquired 50 credits, and have completed their MBA Degree Thesis as the final product of their seminars and research guidance. 

MSc in Finance

MSc in Finance program is a full-time, two-year program conducted in English. This program welcomes students without prior professional work experience, as they will receive fundamental knowledge and skills to become financial experts in the future. The extensive program ensures that students will be well-equipped in terms of knowledge in economics, finance and relevant areas that will be beneficial to their career in finance.

Similar to International MBA, two categories in the curriculum are required to be fulfilled, however with different subjects. 

The Compulsory Core Course consists of seven courses, all of which are required.

In order to earn an MBA degree (Master of Science in Finance) from Waseda University, students must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in the MSc in Finance Program (full-time) for two years
  • Complete and obtain 50 (or more) credits
  • Complete the Degree Thesis and pass the evaluation screening
  • Pass the final examination (oral defense)

Waseda-Nanyang DMBA

This unique program features Waseda University and Nanyang Business School in Singapore and is a combination of the strengths of two top business schools in Asia. One-year MBA

The one-year MBA program is conducted in Japanese only. Students enrolled in this program are professionals who want to acquire managerial skills and business knowledge in one year, hence the program is a condensed MBA degree where students will undergo intense and rigorous training.

Evening MBA (General)

The Evening MBA program is conducted on evenings and Saturdays, which allow busy students to accommodate their current job in the corporate environment. This program is intended for professionals who want to obtain a broad set of skills that will benefit them in a career in management.

Evening MBA (Specialized)

The timing and schedule of this program are similar to Evening MBA (General) in which it is also on evenings and Saturday. This program is a part-time degree that caters to the needs of professionals already in the business world who want to enhance and obtain more advanced knowledge to even strive further in their current careers.

Within the program, there are two tracks for students to choose from:

The majority of the program is in Japanese with a number of courses offered in English. Under the instruction of professors in the seminar assigned to them prior to admission, students are required to write a graduation thesis on a selected topic in their area of specialization.
